Night was still young but there were only five bottles of almond milk left at the display. They were original and vanilla flavor. Tempo tried the 435-mililiter original flavor for Rp50,000.

“Ninety percent of the costumers drink it because the like the flavor,” said Romie Johanes, the Brand and Business Development Head of Rejuve in a separate occassion. The rest, Romie said, are drinking it because they truly care about the health effect of the almond milk.

According to data obtained from the United States Agricultural Ministry, 100 grams or the drink contain 20 grams of protein, 20 grams of carb, and 45 grams fat. The rest are vitamin and mineral. The fat dominating the milk is the good fat—single and double unsaturated fat—that can decrease cholesterol.

The trend started from United States in the past decade. As reported by Business, the almond milk replaced the popularity of soy milk as plant-based milk. Despite of its popularity, nutritionist Emilia Achmadi said that the drink should not be called ‘milk’ because it is not derived from mammary gland.

“The drink derived through extraction process is more appropriate to be called extract, like green bean extract,” Emilia said adding that the calcium content in the almond extract is far too small compared to real milk.

However, she admitted that almond extract has some benefits compared to cow milk and soy milk. It has higher content of good fats. Another benefit is that it is lactose-free which makes it good for people with lactose intolerance.

The nutritionist of the One Stop Sport Nutrition also recommends drinking almond milk as snack.

“Especially for those who needs more energy such as athletes,” she said.

Eating almond has even more benefits than drinking its extract. First, we have more control on the consumption so that it wont become calories. Secondly, eating almond nut requires more complex digestion process. Munching it would activate teeth and saliva that lead to production of enzyme that will help the digestion system. Besides, eating almond nut will give us more fibres than drinking it in a liquid form.

“Smoothies, extract, and juices decrease the fiber content,” Emilia added.
